Confused between Samsung Galaxy Grand and Micromax A116 Canvas HD, help.

Both, the Canvas HD and the Galaxy Grand, are 5-inch phablets that run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and come with 8MP cameras. That said, there are a few differences. Let's look at these phones individually.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD: Micromax boasts of a quadcore processor under its hood that far outperforms the Galaxy Grand, allowing for a smooth experience that complements its good build quality. The handset handles multi-tasking well and plays any video or game without a stutter. The IPS HD screen is also sharp and has wide viewing angles, but colours look washed out when compared to the Grand. The camera on this device is its biggest drawback, with pictures appearing blurry in low light and light sources showing streaks; it's passable to use with apps like Instagram. Sound quality is good, but be warned that you need to use the earphones packaged with the device - other 3.5mm headphones may not work as well.

Samsung Galaxy Grand: Spec-to-spec, the Galaxy Grand is closer to the Micromax A110 Canvas 2 than the A116 Canvas HD. But what you get is a customized Android interface that is really quite nice and intuitive to use, especially for first-time smartphone owners. The device looks and feels premium, and even though the screen isn't HD, it pumps out vibrant colours and has great viewing angles. What's more, for multimedia, it's a far better phone than the Canvas HD - sound quality is very good and the camera captures images with accurate colour representation. But the dual-core processor makes the phone stutter when multitasking, and there are a couple of times when the screen froze on us during tests. In fact, a few users we know have had repeated problems with the handset periodically hanging and rebooting.

So what should you buy? Both the phones offer middling battery life, but have good build quality, so it's the individual features that separates them. With its high-def screen, stellar performance and lower price, the Canvas HD is the better choice for anyone who doesn't care about camera performance as much.

However, if multimedia is what matters to you, then the Galaxy Grand is a better purchase. What you should also consider here is that Samsung is a tried-and-tested brand, known for its quality after-sales service and support. It inspires more confidence in the event of things going wrong as compared to Micromax, which doesn't have a great track record in after-sales support, nor the same number of service centers.

Galaxy S IV: This is Samsung’s time, analysts say

Samsung Electronics is the world leader in smartphone sales, besting Apple in many countries. Now Samsung of South Korea is stepping up its challenge to Apple, bringing the battle to its rival's home turf.

At a news conference in New York on Thursday, its first American promotional event for its flagship smartphone, Samsung showed off the Galaxy S4, which has a screen that is bigger than the latest iPhone.

The device has quirky software features, including Smart Scroll, in which the front camera detects when someone is looking at the phone, and scrolls the screen according to the angle the phone is tilted. The phone can also be controlled with hand gestures. Waving a hand down in front of the phone will scroll up on a web page, for example.

"Once you spend time with the Galaxy S4, I'm very confident you'll find how its innovations make your life simple and fuller," said JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile Communications.

With the prominent introduction of the phone, Samsung is trying to end its role as understudy to its more celebrated competitor, especially in the crucial American market, where Apple still rules. Even as Samsung has surpassed Apple in global market share, it is often criticised in the United States as an effective copycat, taking most of its product cues from Apple. But Samsung has begun flexing its marketing muscle more aggressively here to try to change that perception.

"This is Samsung's time right now," said Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray. "They are clearly gaining more attention this time around than they ever have."

Apple itself is showing signs of concern. In an unusual move on the eve of the Samsung event, Philip W Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for worldwide marketing, gave several interviews in which he discussed flaws in mobile devices based on Android, the Google operating system used by most of Samsung's smartphones.

But Apple still has many big advantages that allow it to defend its position in the mobile business. Its iPhone 5 was the best-selling smartphone in the world in the holiday quarter, even though Samsung's vast portfolio of phones is bigger than Apple's. By charging a premium for its products, Apple raked in 69 percent of the profits in the smartphone business last year, compared with 34 percent for Samsung, according to a report by T Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity.

While analysts like Munster expect Samsung to gain market share in the United States in the coming two quarters, they predict Apple is likely to still dominate the crucial holiday shopping season, when gift shoppers buy mobile devices in droves. That is when sales of the iPhone typically outperform all other devices. By unveiling its flagship phone just before spring, Samsung is striking at Apple months before a new iPhone is expected to be released.

"Everyone stays out of the zone of iPhone launch periods," said Horace Dediu, a blogger and analyst with Asymco.

Apple's iPhones fly off the shelves in the United States, but Samsung is still the top seller of smartphones worldwide. And in the United States, Samsung is gaining.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, sales of Samsung devices accounted for 30 percent of the American smartphone market, up from 21 percent the previous year, according to NPD Group, the research firm. For the same time period, Apple's iPhone accounted for 39 percent of the market, down from 41 percent the previous year.

Samsung is far exceeding Apple in its rate of growth worldwide. In the holiday quarter last year, Samsung shipped 63.7 million smartphones, up 76 percent from the previous year, according to IDC. Apple sold 47.8 million, up 29.2 percent from the previous year.

Samsung has won the global volume race by releasing multiple models of smartphones at different prices and sizes, while Apple has released one new model every year. Along with the Galaxy S III, the Note II, a Samsung phone with an even bigger screen, has been a popular seller.

Microsoft Office 2013 license terms changed to allow PC switching

Microsoft has changed terms of the license agreement for the latest version of its office suite, Office 2013, allowing users to transfer licenses between different PCs. Citing consumer feedback, Microsoft has changed the license terms for the retail versions of Office 2013, including for Office Home and Student 2013, Office Home and Business 2013, and Office Professional 2013, keeping them in line with license terms for Office 2010.

Microsoft had initially mentioned that it was not possible to transfer the Office license to another computer or user. However, after protests from users, the company had clarified that the license could be transferred in cases where the users' computer failed under warranty. The same was explained by Microsoft on the Office blog, a few days ago as there was a lot of user backlash because of the ambiguity in the terms.

Now Microsoft has changed the terms altogether, stating that users will be able to install and transfer their Office 2013 license on a new device on a condition that there's a gap of 90 days between the two installations or even before that if there's a hardware failure.

Microsoft announced the new terms with a formal statement on its blog:

"Based on customer feedback we have changed the Office 2013 retail license agreement to allow customers to move the software from one computer to another. This means customers can transfer Office 2013 to a different computer if their device fails or they get a new one. Previously, customers could only transfer their Office 2013 software to a new device if their PC failed under warranty.

While the licensing agreement text accompanying Office 2013 software will be updated in future releases, this change is effective immediately and applies to Office Home and Student 2013, Office Home and Business 2013, Office Professional 2013 and the standalone Office 2013 applications. With this change, customers can move the software to another computer once every 90 days. These terms are identical to those found in the Office 2010 software."

However, it's worth noting that the subscription based version of the office suite, Office 365 allows users to install the software on 5 different devices, without any limitations.

Google Play turns one!!!!

Google Play turned a year old on Wednesday and the Android-focussed rival to Apple's online iTunes shop celebrated with deals on books, games, music, movies and apps.
The launch of Google Play on March 6 of last year marked the rebirth of Android Market, a virtual store devoted to content for smartphones or tablets powered by the Google-backed software.

Google Play now boasts millions of e-books and songs along with more than 7,00,000 apps.

"Google Play has grown rapidly in the last year," vice president of digital content Jamie Rosenberg said in a blog post.

"We've partnered with all the major music companies, movie studios and publishers to bring you the music, movies, TV shows, books and magazines you love."

Apple has consistently been a priority for developers, who prioritise crafting mini-programs for iPhones, iPads, or iPod Touch devices before turning their attention to Android gadgets.

Not only do the legions of Apple device owners make an alluring market for developers, the company's tight control of operating software creates an environment in which apps can be made to run across devices.

Smartphone and tablet makers get Android free of charge and individualise the operating system for devices, leaving developers facing a "fragmented" market requiring many versions of the same app.

HP tops PC sales in India: IDC

Hewlett-Packard has maintained its position as India's No. 1 PC brand with a 16.5% market share in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to an IDC report. The manufacturer has regained the overall top position in Q4 2012, with market share gain of 3.5% on a year-on-year basis.

HP in December 2012 launched its first ultrathin hybrid PC - HP Envy X2, along with a new portfolio of touch-enabled Ultrabooks and All-in-One PCs. The following month, the company joined forces with Universal Music India and Hungama.com to launch HP Connected Music, a service that gives Indian consumers access to global and regional digital music and content. This subscription-based music service provides unlimited rental downloadable music free of charge for a year. This brand new service is available on selected HP notebooks with the embedded Windows 8 launcher.

Globally, HP shipped 62 million PCs per week or 2 PCs every second, last year.

Vinay Awasthi, senior director - product category, PPS, Hewlett-Packard India said, "HP's position as No. 1 yet again is a testament to the trust that our customers place in HP's innovation, rich product portfolio and an unmatched support infrastructure. We take this opportunity to reconfirm our commitment to continue elevating their experiences by offering the very best in notebooks and desktops, backed by the HP's support promise."

Venu Reddy, research director, IDC said, "HP has moved into #1 place in CY Q4 2012 (Oct-Dec 2012), driven by strong sales/marketing campaigns and good mind-share among consumers. This momentum was driven by the fact that portable computers continue to gain in dominance among the PC market segments despite weaker overall PC marketplace."

BlackBerry 10 gets first update: Battery life and low-light camera fixes, more

BlackBerry has pushed out the first update for the BlackBerry Z10, promising improvements in battery life, multimedia and third-party app performance, and enterprise features around calendars and contacts. The new firmware, a 150MB download, is being released as an OTA update, and according to BlackBerry has been pieced together primarily in response to consumer feedback from the first month of reports.
One of the most important changes will be to battery life, with BlackBerry saying that it has wrapped up more than 60 optimizations to try to address complaints. Poor runtimes from the Z10 were one of our key complaints when we reviewed the smartphone, with it often failing to make it through a full day. “Heavy users especially should see a longer average usage per charge cycle” BlackBerry claims, though gives no specifics as to what has changed.
Elsewhere, there should be improved low-light performance from the camera, another point of contention among early-adopters, who felt the Z10′s shots were simply too dark. The way BlackBerry 10 deals with call logging and conversations has also been tweaked, and there’s a fix for using Google Calendars on the platform. Pulling in contacts from online databases is also smoothed.
Video playback in the browser has been refined, and BlackBerry has also fettled the third-party app environment. That should be “fast and smooth” now, the company says, pointing out that a new influx of titles – such as WhatsApp – is expected in March.
The recommendation is that users update to 10.0.10.85 over a WiFi connection, since 150MB might be slow going (or just plain expensive) over mobile data. It will pop up as a notification over “the coming weeks”, or owners can update manually by going to “Check for Updates” in the Software Updates section of the settings.
