BlackBerry 10: All set

The maker of the BlackBerry smartphone is promising a speedier device, a superb typing experience and the ability to keep work and personal identities separate on the same phone. It's the fruit of a crucial, long-overdue makeover for the Canadian company.

Thorsten Heins, chief executive of Research In Motion Ltd, will show off the first phone with the new BlackBerry 10 system in New York on Wednesday. A marketing campaign that includes a Super Bowl ad will accompany the long-anticipated debut. Repeated delays have left the once-pioneering BlackBerry an afterthought in the shadow of Apple's trend-setting iPhone and Google's Android-driven devices.

Now, there's some optimism. Previews of the software have gotten favorable reviews on blogs. Financial analysts are starting to see some slight room for a comeback. RIM's stock has nearly tripled to $16.18 from a nine-year low in September, though it's still nearly 90 percent below its 2008 peak of $147.

Most analysts consider a BlackBerry 10 success to be crucial for the company's long-term viability.

"The old models are becoming obsolete quickly," BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said. "There is still a big user base but it's going to rotate off. The question is: Where do they rotate to?"

The BlackBerry, pioneered in 1999, has been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people. Corporate information-technology managers like the phones because they're relatively secure and easy to manage. Many employees loved them because of physical keyboards that were easier to type on than the touch-screen iPhone. President Barack Obama couldn't bear to part with it when he took office. Oprah Winfrey declared it one of her "favorite things." People got so addicted that the device was nicknamed "the CrackBerry."

Google announces redesigned, faster image search

Search giant Google has revamped its image search feature. In a blog post, company's associate product manager, Hongyi Li, said that based on feedback from both users and webmasters, the company has redesigned Google Images.
The revamped Google Images page will be faster and more reliable than the current version, claims the post. The images will soon be displayed in an inline panel and will be accompanied by the associated metadata and key information.

In the post on the official Google Webmaster blog, Hongyi Li said users "will be able to quickly flip through a set of images by using the keyboard. If you want to go back to browsing other search results, just scroll down and pick up right where you left off."

Li wrote that important information about any particular image, such as its size, name of the domain hosting it and title of host page, will appear next to the image. Moreover, the domain name will become clickable once the redesigned image search goes live. He also said, "We also added a new button to visit the page the image is hosted on. This means that there are now four clickable targets to the source page instead of just two."

With this update, Google has done away with the policy of loading the source page of an image in an iframe, which optimises the user experience. This update will bring Google Images for desktops closer to its tablet counterpart.

Samsung launches Galaxy Grand phablet at Rs 21k

Samsung India has launched Galaxy Grand Duos with dual-sim functionality, bringing another phablet to the market just a day after Micromax announced its Canvas HD with 5-inch screen. The company said it will retail the device with a flip cover in the box and price it at Rs 21,500.

The all-new Galaxy Grand Duos has a 5-inch WVGA TFT screen and is powered by Android4.1 (Jelly Bean). This smartphone runs on a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz and has 1GB RAM. Samsung has continued with the design language it introduced in the Galaxy S III in this smartphone as well.

At the back, the smartphone has an 8MP camera with LED flash, while there is a 2MP snapper on the front. Available only in an 8GB variant, the device's memory capacity can be raised up to 64GB via microSD card. Running on a 2,100mAh battery, the Galaxy Grand Duos has connectivity features like 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, S Voice and microUSB. Other features of the device include Direct Call, Smart Alert, Popup Video and AllShare Play. Galaxy Grand will also have multi-app functionality, allowing users to access two apps simultaneously.

A Samsung India executive said that if a user is taking a call on one sim, Galaxy Grand Duos' auto-forwarding feature will automatically redirect an incoming call on the other sim to the first connection.

Micromax recently claimed that it has shipped more phablets than Samsung in the country. At the unveiling of Canvas HD, the indigenous manufacturer said it shipped 1.98 lakh phablets, while Samsung imported 1.89 lakh units of its Galaxy Note and Note II tablets.

Google 'planning' to kill passwords

LONDON: Since passwords have become an increasing problem for many, Google could be set to replace them entirely and is experimenting with USB keys, mobile phones and even jewellery that can act as a physical "key" to give users access to their account.

The search giant's security bosses are set to publish their findings next month and say they could soon be commonplace.

The Yubikey, which is believed to have been tested by Google, can automatically log users onto all their accounts without ever asking for a password by placing it into a Google laptop.

The tiny key can be used in any machine with a USB drive, and acts as a physical "key" to unlock the user's account.

It can automatically log users in to all of their accounts, and even into their favourite websites, without ever asking for a password.

In the upcoming issue of IEEE Security and Privacy Magazine, Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and engineer Mayank Upadhyay are set to detail what is basically a physical key with a "smart chip" embedded inside it.

"Along with many in the industry, we feel passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep users safe," the Daily Mail quoted the pair as writing in their paper, according to Wired.

The firm is also believed to be experimenting with wireless chips that are already built into some mobile phones, and can even be built in jewellery.

'We'd like your smartphone or smartcard-embedded finger ring to authorize a new computer via a tap on the computer, even in situations in which your phone might be without cellular connectivity,' the team write.

The firm is also believed to be addressing the obvious problem with the system - users losing their "key".

The firm is thought to be developing a simple system to replace them.

The USB Keys can be placed on a key chains, and are similar to the ID readers required by many banks to allow people to log into their accounts

However, the pair admits that they will have to rely on websites to support the scheme.

The USB keys are resilient to being dropped, and can even be taken underwater without ruining them.

Bendable battery here, flexible phone countdown starts

Scientists have developed world's first bendable lithium-ion batteries, paving way for flexible mobile devices.

Researchers led by professor Lee Sang-young of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea developed imprintable, fluid-like polymer electrolytes that are used for lithium-ion batteries.

Conventional batteries use liquefied electrolytes and are put into square-shaped cases, which makes them inflexible with risks of explosion. Because of these disadvantages, there have been efforts to develop high-molecule electrolytes.

The use of fluid-like electrolytes not only makes the battery bendable but also more stable, 'Korea Joongang Daily' reported.

Also, there is no need to manufacture the square-shaped battery cases when using the fluid-electrolytes.

Just like spreading jam on bread, spreading the fluid-like electrolytes on electrodes and exposing them to ultraviolet rays for 30 seconds is how the new rechargeable battery is created, the report said.

Another advantage of the imprintable electrolytes is greater efficiency. If electrolytes are imprintable, they can have various patterns printed on them, helping chemical reactions that raise the output of the batteries.

"Conventional lithium-ion batteries that use liquefied electrolytes had safety problems as the film that separates the electrolytes may melt under heat, in which case the positive and negative elements may come in contact, causing an explosion," said an official at the South Korean Education, Science and Technology ministry.

"Because the new battery uses flexible but solid materials, and not liquids, it can be expected to show a much higher level of stability than conventional rechargeable batteries," the official said.

Facebook expands search deal with Microsoft Bing

Facebook unveiled plans Tuesday to expand its Web search partnership with Microsoft'sBing as the social network launched its new function for internal search.
"We have a great partnership with the team atMicrosoft and have worked with them for year," Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said. "We have been working with the team there for months to build this out."

Facebook Inc took the wraps off a new search tool on Tuesday that lets people trawl their network of friends to find everything from restaurants to movie recommendations, an improvement that's likely to increase competition with review websites like Yelp and potentially even GoogleInc. The so-called graph search marks the company's biggest foray into online search to date, though it displays only information within the walls of the social network rather than links to sites available across the Internet.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's 28-year-old founder and chief executive, introduced the new product at the company's first major product launch since a rocky initial public offering in May.

"Graph search is designed to take a precise query and return to you the answer, not links to other places where you might get the answer," Zuckerberg told reporters at its Menlo Park, California, headquarters. "What you've seen today is a really different product from anything else that's out there."

Facebook shares, which have climbed 15 percent since the start of the year, slid 3 percent Tuesday to just above $30. The product news fell short of some of the most optimistic predictions, which included speculation that the social network would introduce its own smartphone or an Internet search engine.

Dubbed "graph search" because Facebook refers to its growing content, data and membership as the "social graph," the function will be available at first only as a "beta," or trial, for just hundreds of thousands of its billion-plus users.

It will let users browse mainly photographs, people, places and members' interests. Zuckerberg stressed that people can sort through only content that has been shared with them, addressing potential privacy concerns.

Shares in Yelp dived more than 6 percent on fears that Facebook's new friends-based search concept will begin to draw users away from the popular reviews site, which also lets people maintain a circle of trusted friends. Google stock held steady.

Some analysts said Facebook may be taking a tiny step toward eventually challenging Google on its home turf, but said that was a much more challenging undertaking and a long-term possibility at best.

Zuckerberg stressed that the new graph search did not encompass Internet searches, Google's specialty.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said the product was inevitable. "We think this will enable them to expand beyond display ads and ultimately compete with Google," he said.

Samsung Galaxy S series crosses 100m-sales mark

click here for Samsung Mobiles in Ezyby.com

Samsung Electronics said that global sales of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones had topped 100 million since the first model debuted in 2010, cementing its dominant position over US rival Apple.

The original Galaxy S phone, launched in June 2010, sold 25 million units, the South Korean electronics giant said in a statement.

The Galaxy S II, launched in April 2011, racked up sales of more than 40 million, and the S III has reached the same volume since coming on the market in May last year.

For Samsung, 2012 was a watershed year that saw it take a giant bite out of Apple as it carved out a dominant position in the global mobile computing market.

Samsung saw its share of the lucrative smartphone market surge to 31.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2012, up from just 3.3 per cent in late 2009.

It extended its lead over Apple as the top maker of smartphones worldwide, according to research firm IHS iSuppli, which gave Samsung 28 per cent of the market in 2012, up from 20 per cent the previous year.

Apple's share rose to 20 per cent in 2012 from 19 per cent, IHS said.

The two tech giants have been embroiled in a long-running patent battle with each accusing the other of stealing designs and technology.

Users advised to disable Java due to security weakness

Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning regarding Java, advising users to disable it in their web browsers. Following this was a Critical Patch Update Pre-Release Announcement from Oracle, which suggests that users temporarily disable it because of security issues. Says the advisement, Java leaves the computer open to attack.

The warning was posted by the Department of Homeland Security’s Emergency Readiness Team, which issued Vulnerability Note VU#625617 to address the issue. Says the advisory, “Due to the number and severity of this and prior Java vulnerabilities, it is recommended that Java be disabled temporarily in web browsers as described in the “Solution” section of the US-CERT Alert and in the Oracle Technical Note ‘Setting the Security Level of the Java Client.’”
Using the vulnerability in Java, individuals with malicious intent can exploit the weakness to infect the machine. Ready-made exploit kits are available for sale online that take advantage of the issue, making it a fairly simple task for anyone to perform. With the kits, randsomeware can be placed on machines and identities can be stolen, among other things.
Oracle has stated that it will release a patch for the issue on January 15 that will fix 86 security vulnerabilities. The company is requesting that users update Java as soon as the possible after the patch is released. In response to the advisory from the Department of Homeland Security, Mozilla announced that newer Java plug-ins on Firefox are now blocked from auto-loading unless the user manually authorizes it.

How to send large files over email and web

Ever wanted to send a large file but were held back by the email providers' attachment limits? Hitesh Raj Bhagat & Karan Bajaj show you how to quickly share larger files using various services.

Sending Large Files: Most email providers allow you to attach up to 25MB of data to one email. This method works fine if you're sending multiple smaller files — you can just split them into batches. But what if you need to send a 1GB video recorded using your camera, without uploading it to YouTube? What if you have a slow internet connection? These are some of the best practices to keep in mind when sending large files.

Zip Multiple Files: Rather than attach & send a large batch of individual files, it's more convienient for the recipient if you just zip them into one file. The added advantage is that you can password protect the file for extra security. Make sure you send the password separately.

Keep The Delete Links: If you use a file hosting service like YouSendIt to send a large file, make sure you copy and save the delete link to your computer. While the file will automatically expire after a while, the delete link can instantly remove a file from the server if need be.

Split Large Files: One of the best free Zip managers, 7-zip (www.7-zip.org) can also be used to split a large file into smaller zip files for easier sending if you have a slow connection. Right click on a file > 7-zip > Add to Archive and fill in the required size in the 'Split to Volumes' box.

4 Best File Sharing Services

BAYFILE: 1) Bayfile has no limit on the number of downloads for your uploaded files and supports file sizes up to 5GB. The interface shows upload speed & time remaining but does not support multiple file upload. The site removes your stored files after 30 days of inactivity. Once the file is uploaded, you can send the sharing and delete links to your email from the site itself to keep them handy.

FILE DROPPER: 2) This one has a clean and easy-to-use interface — it's one of the best free services for file sharing. There is no sign-up required and you can upload files as big as 5GB. Unlike other services, your files are not deleted if they are not being downloaded on a regular basis — they are deleted only after it stays on their server for 30 days. Here again, you can only upload one file at a time.

SLING FILE: 3) This relatively unknown file hosting service lets you upload files as big as 50GB. Plus, it also lets you upload multiple files at once. Files are only deleted after 180 days of inactivity. Once uploaded, you can send the download and delete links to your email and also share the download link via email with three other people. There are no limits on the number of file downloads per month.

YOURFILE LINK:
4) This is another file sharing site that does not require a sign-up. You can upload files up to 5GB in size with unlimited downloads. However, unlike the other three sites mentioned here, Yourfilelink deletes the file if it has not been downloaded in 15 days. It also shows multiple advertisements, giving it a cluttered look. However, uploads did seem to move along a bit faster than the others.

YAHOO: The all new Yahoo Mail has a much cleaner and faster interface than before. When you sign in, it opens to your inbox and the only highlighted button is 'Compose'. Other actions get highlighted when you select a mail. There's a quick shortcut to delete if you just hover over a subject and you have the option of viewing all photos and attachments ever sent to you, all in one place.

GMAIL: Gmail has a new Compose Message window that resembles a large chat window. Essentially, this allows you to compose a mail without moving away from your inbox (you can refer to other emails as you type). Search has also improved and now resembles Google's Instant Web Search — it displays matching results from email as well as files in Google Drive as you type the search query.

OUTLOOK: Microsoft has introduced a new feature called 'Instant actions' for your inbox. Instant actions are quick access icons that appear next to the subject lines in your message list. Using these you can mark as read, delete or flag a mail without even opening it. You can also connect your account with Facebook and chat with your friends from within Outlook. Another very useful addition is the Outlook alias. You can create an 'alias' or additional mail address with a minute — these alias IDs can be used for various things, such as signing up for newsletters and preventing spam from filling up your primary email inbox.

Send Large Files Directly From Email

GMAIL GOOGLE DRIVE: Gmail is well integrated with Google Drive. Just sign in to your email account and click 'Drive' on the top bar. Select the files you want to share (multiples possible), add email addresses and click send.

YAHOO YOUSENDIT: Sign in to Yahoo Mail and on the left pane you'll see 'Applications' — expand it and click on Attach Large Files. Then you can attach a file as large as 100MB to your email & it will be available to download for 30 days.

OUTLOOK- SKYDRIVE: Sign in to Outlook.com or SkyDrive with your Windows Live or Hotmail ID. Then you can easily share a single file or a complete folder. Just select a file/folder, click on share and the receipient gets emailed.
