Harman Kardon Soundsticks III 2.1 Speaker system

Key Features

• Self-Powered Satellite Speakers and Subwoofer System
• 20-watt powered Subwoofer
• For any multimedia device, with Touch Controls
• A museum-honoured design

When PCs evolved from office workstations into entertainment centres, they turned from beige boxes into minor works of art. PC speaker designs are rarely as engaging, but one exception is the Harman Kardon Soundsticks III set.

This third-generation design isn’t particularly different to the original, which was developed in collaboration with Apple with an eye to making it blend in with the curvy first-generation iMac. Those iMacs look dated now, but the Soundsticks III speakers are as appealing as ever – an achievement for something that resembles a robo-jellyfish accompanied by a duo of see-through Subway sandwiches.

Closer scrutiny revealed other problems, though. These speakers make up for their lack of very high-frequency detail – which nothing at this price can muster – by laying it on thick in the upper-mid frequencies. It’s a common approach, and while it gave some audio sources a satisfying sense of detail and presence, it made others sound brittle and harsh.

We also struggled to find the best position and volume setting for the subwoofer. The downward-firing speaker cone gave a satisfying punch that literally shook the floor in bass-heavy music and games. Putting the subwoofer on the desk cleaned this up a little, but also brought the tangle of cables into view.

Conclusion

The elegant, curvy visual appearance of the Soundsticks III is a little at odds with the aggressive sonic tone. However, the sound from the set was patchy, and some elements of the design weren’t as clean as we’d want from something so visually striking. We’ll stick with our unpretentious Creative Inspire T3130, thanks all the same.

Samsung‘s Galaxy devices sale tops with 10million in India

South Korean company  Samsung Electronics said it has sold more than 10 million Galaxy devices in the Indian market since the launch of the first Galaxy device, 'Galaxy S', in June 2010.

"Innovative devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and SIII, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Y have caught the imagination of customers and helped us democratise the smartphone experience in the Indian market," Samsung VP (Mobile) Asim Warsi told PTI.

This has helped Samsung sell more than 10 million Galaxy devices in the Indian market since June 2010, when the first Galaxy device was launched, he added.

The Galaxy series comprises a portfolio of devices like Galaxy Y (launched in October 2011), Galaxy SII (May 2011), Galaxy Tab (November 2011), Galaxy Tab 2 310 (May 2012) and Galaxy SIII.

Though the company declined to comment on individual contribution of a particular device, Galaxy Y series, Note series and SIII together contributed more than 50 per cent of the sales.

"Through our series of consistent Smartphone launches, Samsung has fuelled the growth of the smartphone market in India and has been a category leader since last year. Samsung's portfolio of 13 Galaxy devices in the Indian market are priced between Rs 6,790 to Rs 39,990," Warsi said.

According to CyberMedia Research (CMR) India Mobile Handsets Market Review, India shipments of mobile handsets was recorded at 102.43 million units during January-June 2012.

Of the smartphones market of 5.50 million units, Samsung had a 41.6 per cent share, while Nokia and Research in Motion had 19.2 per cent and 12.1 per cent share, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S IV codenamed 'Project J', may launch April 2013

Samsung Galaxy S, SII and SIII

Earlier rumours have indicated that the Samsung Galaxy S IV will have a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED display with 1920*1080 resolution, giving it a pixel density of 441PPI. That report is in line with other rumours which suggested that Samsung and LG are working on smartphones with full-HD display, which may be released in first-half of 2013. It would make sense for Samsung's next flagship device to be its first smartphones with full-HD display.

Other rumours had indicated the Galaxy S IV will feature a 13-megapixel camera, a significant upgrade over the Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel rear shooter. There's also buzz about the Galaxy S IV featuring a 2 GHz quad-core Exynos processor and an 8-core GPU.

Google allows 10GB attachments in Gmail

Do you feel the 25MB limit for attachments in Gmail is not enough? Well Google seems to have heard your prayers. The search giant has integrated Google Drive-based attachments in its email service so that users can now send files up to 10GB in size. Google Driveis the company's cloud storage service, similar to Microsoft SkyDrive and DropBox.

On the official Gmail blog, Phil Sharp, Gmail product manager, posted: "you can insert files from Drive directly into an email without leaving your Gmail." He added, "...with Drive, you can insert files up to 10GB -- 400 times larger than what you can send as a traditional attachment. Also, because you're sending a file stored in the cloud, all your recipients will have access to the same, most-up-to-date version."

In case all the recipients of the mail do not have access to the file in Google Drive, Gmail will prompt the user so the requisite settings can be altered from the open message box itself. Moreover, users also have the option of simply pasting the links of Google Drive files they want to share with the mail recipients in the compose box.

As of now, Google has only integrated Google Drive-based attachment feature in the new compose box. Therefore, users who had opted out of the new look of compose box need to opt for it once again in order to mail Google Drive-based files. Those who want to mail files bigger than 25MB in size need to transfer them to Google Drive in order to send them via Gmail.

PS Vita firmware update 2.0 adds an email client and improves the browser.

Sony has released perhaps its biggest update yet to the PlayStation Vita. Apart from coming with support for PlayStation Plus on the handheld, firmware version 2.0 adds an email client along with improvements to the browser and several other new features.

"Email is below par next to a modern smartphone"

The email app, si
mply called Email, is unsurprisingly below par next to what you'd expect from a modern smartphone. It's easy enough to use, with automatic setup for Gmail and Yahoo Mail accounts; one nice feature is that you can add multiple accounts, which is more than we can say for the Gmail app on iOS at least. However, it lacks basic features such as conversation threading and Gmail archiving, and of course there aren't any push notifications, though you can set it to check in the background every 15 minutes. We can't say we're huge fans of the faux-envelope paper visual design, either, which doesn't make great use of the Vita's 5-inch screen. Still, if you somehow find yourself in a situation where you need to fire off a quick message and you only have your Vita on you, it'll be a lot less painful than muddling through the browse.

iMessage and FaceTime Back Up, Apple Users Complain About Outage on Twitter

Apple users took to Twitter to vent their frustrations over iMessage and FaceTime service interruptions.
iOS devices and Macs with OS X 10.6.6 or higher experienced a nearly five-hour outage, from 11:45 a.m. to 4:32 p.m. PT (2:45 to 7:45 p.m. ET) after the Cupertino, Calif. company’s instant messenger service and video-calling app suffered from downtime.
Apple confirmed the outages on its status page around 1:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. ET), saying that some “users are unable to use” use iMessage or place FaceTime calls.
At the time of writing, the company’s system status page says, “Normal service has been restored.” It’s unclear what caused the downtime. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Prior to the fix, however, iPad and iPhone owners were among those who complained about the lack of service on Twitter

HTC’s pre-2012 smartphones may never get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

Waiting for the latest Android update is usually a hit or a miss if you don’t have the latest high-end smartphone. HTC (2498) says it’s prioritizing One X and One S devices to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Once the update gets pushed out for those devices, the company will work on getting Jelly Bean running on devices that it la

unched in 2012. As far as 2011 devices, HTC says it’ll see if it’s doable after the evaluation for all the 2012 devices wraps up. Anyone with a One V or Desire C are out of luck, as HTC says it won’t be updating any devices with 512MB of RAM. Lastly, as DroidLife notes, it’s not clear if the Thunderbolt and its 768MB of RAM qualifies for Jelly Bean or not, but seeing as it still hasn’t received its promised Ice Cream Sandwich update, Jelly Bean isn’t looking too likely.

Lenovo not worried that 7-inch tablets will wreck its PC business.
With a variety of smaller Android tablets already available, along with the iPad mini and the possibility of an Xbox Surface, 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the 7-inch tablet. In fact, worldwide sales of 7-inch tablets are expected to double from 34 million units in 2012 to 67 million in 2013. Smaller tablets already account

for 28% of all projected tablet sales in 2012 and are on pace to increase to 33% by 2013. Despite these numbers, however, the world’s largest PC vendor isn’t worried. Lenovo (0992), which also offers a variety of 7-inch devices, expects the growing 7-inch tablet market to compete with large-screen smartphones, rather than PCs. The Chinese company knows a thing or two about the PC market, while sales within the industry as a whole have declined, Lenovo has managed to consistently grow and continues to post impressive financial results.

Lenovo Chief Executive Yang Yuanqing during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Thursday said that after reading a report on Apple’s iPad mini, he was optimistic about the trend in the tablet market.

“The market accepts the 7-inch [tablet] better than the 10-inch. That’s a very strong signal, the tablet will not replace the traditional PC,” he said, according to CNET. “Probably, the tablet will compete with the large-screen smartphone rather than the PC.”

The executive did note, however, that convertible laptops and the use of touch screens will become more prevalent thanks to Windows 8.

“Touch will become a very popular feature on the traditional PC,” he said, adding that Lenovo is ramping up its supply of the screens. “We can’t guarantee we’ll get 100 percent of what we want to get [but] we are definitely trying our best to get enough supply.”

Android 4.2 is the safest version of Android yet

Android Security Android 4.2

It has been five years since Android exploded onto the scene and since then the world’s most popular mobile operating system has seen a variety of enhancements. The first iteration of Android was lackluster to say the least, although each software update has delivered much-needed improvements. Google (GOOG) completely revamped its mobile platform with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich, the operating system that finally integrated smartphones and tablets. Following the release of Android 4.0, the Internet giant added increased security features to its then Android Market, now known as the Play Store. The “Bouncer” feature worked by analyzing apps that were uploaded to the Play Store, although users who chose to install apps through sideloading were left unprotected. With the introduction of Android 4.2, Google has finally brought a new high-powered security feature to the Android platform.
The software is essentially an extension of the security features found in the Play Store, but rather than scanning apps on the marketplace, Android 4.2′s new security feature will scan for malicious or potentially harmful codes in apps that are loaded onto a user’s device. Users have the ability to completely opt-in or out of the new feature, although it is unclear as to why anyone would be opposed to more protection.
Android Security Android 4.2
“We view security as a universal thing,” Android VP of Engineering Hiroshi Lockheimer said in an interview with Computer World. “Assuming the user wants this additional insurance policy, we felt like we shouldn’t exclude one source over another.”
The scanning process is conducted behind the scenes and is able to instantly find and analyze third-party apps that are loaded onto a device. If the app is recognized on Google’s servers as a safe program, installation will proceed as normal. If an app is flagged as dangerous, the system will prevent the users from installing it. For programs that Google does not recognize or those that include questionable codes, the system will only warn the user of the potential dangers.
“We have a catalog of 700,000 applications in the Play Store, and beyond that, we’re always scanning stuff on the Web in terms of APKs that are appearing,” Lockheimer said. “We have a pretty good understanding of the app ecosystem now, whether something’s in the Play Store or not.”
Android 4.2 also includes a behind-the-scenes feature that will alert a users anytime an app attempts to send a text message to a premium service. Similar to the app scanning service, this feature can be disabled in the system settings.
The Android platform has been targeted with malware more than any other mobile operating system, however with the latest Jelly Bean software version, Google doing more than ever to keep users safe.

London to deploy 14,000 iPad-controlled smart street lights over the next four years
The City of London is planning to make a serious upgrade to the street lighting system in Westminster over the next four years. The borough has committed to spending £3.25 million to replace 14,000 lights with new energy efficient versions. What's most interesting about these new lights is that they are "smart street lights," which have the ability to alert workers through an iPad app when they need to repaired or replaced. Additionally, technicians can control the output of each light with the app, further increasing efficiency.

A first for the UK, the city council says that its initial investment in the smart street lights will be recouped within seven years thanks to the new lights' lower cost of operation. The lights will allegedly save taxpayers £420,000 per year in energy bills starting in 2015. With favorable figures like that, it's likely that we will see other modern cities adopt similar smart lighting systems in the future.

Apple iPhone 5 prices start at Rs 45,500 in India

Apple iPhone 5, which will be launched in India on November 2, will be priced at Rs 45,500 for the entry-level 16GB model. The 32 and 64GB models will be sold at 52,500 and 59,500 respecti

vely.

The prices have been shared by Redington, one of the two distribution partners of Apple in India, in the country and are in line with the unconfirmed price range which was reported earlier.

Redington and Ingram have also confirmed Friday report that Apple is set to launch the iPhone 5, its latest smartphone, in India on November 2, 2012. Apple has joined hands with Redington and Ingram Micro to distribute its flagship device in the country.

This is a departure from Apple's earlier strategy of partnering with telecom operators like Airteland Aircel to retail the phone in India. Redington and Ingram Micro already distribute iPad and iPods in the country.

Considering that the device will not be tied to a few telecom operators only, most telcos in India have readied their stocks of nano-sim cards which can be used only in iPhone 5.

Besides online site Infibeam, another online retailer Saholic has begun taking pre-orders for the 16GB variant of iPhone 5 at Rs 45,500. Infibeam had started taking advance bookings at Rs 5,000, while the remaining amount will be collected at the time of launch.

Apple is yet to launch the unlocked version of iPhone 5 in the US, its home country, and only sells the device with carrier partners like AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.

Hackers crack Sony PlayStation 3 again, leak console’s encryption keys

Two more months and Sony would have made it through the entire year without any drama involving hackers trying to crack its console security or bring down its PlayStation Network. According to Eurogamer, the PlayStation 3′s security has been breached by a hacker group called “The Three Tuskateers.” The hackers reportedly discovered the console’s “LV0″ firmware decryption keys and were forced to leak it out for free after another Chinese hacking crew called the “BlueDiskCFW” planned to profit off their work. In layman’s terms, the LV0 keys allow hackers to easily decrypt any PS3 firmware, meaning any patches Sony adds could easily be circumvented.

The Three Tuskateers said they had never intended to release their findings on breaching the PS3 if not for other hackers wanting to make a quick a buck. A custom firmware for the PS3 is now reportedly circulating the Internet, which should allow for all sorts of unsigned code to run on it, including homebrew, cheats and even piracy. It’s currently unclear if this is the “final” PS3 hack that will doom the PlayStation 3 to potential piracy or not.

MICROSOFT HAS SOLD 70 MILLION XBOX 360 CONSOLES WORLDWIDE SINCE 2005

As the Xbox 360 enters its seventh year on the market, Microsoft has announced that its second game console has sold 70 million units worldwide since it launched in 2005. It still trails the 96.56 million Wii consoles Nintendo (NTDOY) has sold, but in terms of competing with Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation 3, it’s still in the lead by
about 6.1 million units.

Seven years is unusually long for a console’s lifespan, when considering the average generation usually lasts around five years. Microsoft’s next Xbox code-named “Durango” is rumored to launch next fall with built-in 3D, Kinect 2, Blu-ray and cloud gaming in tow. It’s also said to be about six times more powerful than the Xbox 360.

Even with seven years under its belt, the Xbox 360 isn’t slowing down. Microsoft is slowly rolling out a new Dashboard update that’ll add a customizable UI, Internet Explorer and Xbox Music to the game console. Add the new possibilities of SmartGlass and the Xbox 360 doesn’t look like it even needs to be replaced any time soon.

Microsoft is also generously slashing $50 off most Xbox 360 consoles and selling new holiday bundles to make its console the best gaming deal this year.
